What renting actually costs
The daily rate is only the start. Add the deposit, transport in a vehicle that will fit it, fuel or the right power supply, a surface cleaner attachment if you want an even finish on flat concrete, appropriate detergent, and your own time — realistically most of a day for a driveway once you include collection and return.
Where DIY genuinely works
A small patio, a section of block wall, garden furniture, a fence, a short walkway. Flat, forgiving, non-porous surfaces where an imperfect result is not very visible and the damage potential is low. These are reasonable weekend jobs.
Where it goes badly wrong
Anything vertical on your house. Stucco, siding and painted wood are damaged by rental-grade pressure in seconds, and the damage is expensive and sometimes irreversible. Roofs should never be attempted. Oil staining will not come out without commercial degreasing and hot water regardless of pressure.
The two most common DIY outcomes
Zebra striping on a driveway, from a wand held at inconsistent distance and speed — permanent, and visible from the street. And etched or blown-out stucco from too much pressure on a wall. Both cost far more to remedy than the original job would have cost to hire.
Cold water is the real limitation
Rental units are almost always cold water. Oil, grease and gum need heat to release. No amount of pressure substitutes for it, which is why the results on those specific problems will disappoint no matter how carefully you work.
How to decide
If it is flat, small, forgiving and you have the day, rent. If it is vertical, large, oil-stained, or attached to your house, the professional cost is lower than the risk-adjusted DIY cost.
