Rust Streaks on Stucco: Causes and Cleaning

Orange and brown streaks on stucco are rust carried down the wall by water. They need a rust-specific cleaner rather than pressure or bleach, and the source has to be fixed or they come back.

Rust needs a rust remover, not bleach

Rust streaks are iron oxide that has soaked into the stucco surface. They do not respond to a normal house wash or to pressure. Bleach does nothing useful on rust and can lighten the stucco around the stain, making the contrast worse. The right tool is an acid-based rust remover, typically one made with oxalic acid or a similar ingredient, applied carefully and rinsed well.

With the right product, light and moderate rust streaks usually lift or fade significantly. Old, deep stains may only lighten.

Where the rust is coming from

Look directly above the streak. The usual sources are metal fixtures: wrought iron railings, window security bars, light fixtures, hose reels, mailboxes, satellite dish mounts and old brackets. Exposed nail heads or corroding metal lath, the mesh inside stucco, can also bleed through, often showing as a small dot with a streak below it.

Another common LA source is sprinkler water. Well water and some irrigation water carry iron. When sprinklers spray the base of a wall day after day, they leave an orange band or a scattering of spots, similar to what you see on concrete near sprinklers. Our guide on rust stains on concrete covers that side of it.

Fertilizers can cause it too. Some granular lawn and plant fertilizers contain iron, and pellets scattered against a wet wall leave small orange spots. Sweep them off the base before watering.

How to lighten rust safely

Start by wetting the wall and the plants below. Apply the rust remover only to the stained area with a brush or small sprayer, following the label. Let it dwell for the time recommended, then rinse thoroughly with low pressure. Repeat if the stain is lightening. Test in a hidden spot first, especially on colored or painted stucco, because acids can change the surface.

Keep rust removers off glass, metal trim, aluminum window frames and nearby plants. Wear gloves and eye protection. Do not mix rust removers with bleach-based cleaners. If you are also washing the whole house, the rust treatment and the general wash are usually done as separate steps.

What not to do

Do not try to blast rust off with high pressure. It drives water into the stucco and can erode the texture, leaving a smooth patch that still has an orange tint. Avoid harsh scrubbing with wire brushes, which can leave more rust behind. And skip strong general-purpose acids unless you know exactly what they do to your finish; they can etch stucco and dull its color.

If the stain is coming through from inside the wall, like corroding lath, cleaning the surface will only buy time. The stain will return as long as the metal keeps rusting.

Avoid leaving metal objects leaning against a wall, too. A bike, a steel planter or a grill left in one spot through the rainy season can leave a rust outline that takes more work to remove than it took to create.

Fix the source, then clean

Cleaning first and fixing later usually means cleaning twice. For metal fixtures, sand and repaint the rusting part with a rust-inhibiting paint, or replace it with stainless or coated hardware. Add a small drip edge or bead of sealant where water runs off a fixture onto the wall. For sprinkler rust, redirect heads away from the wall or switch nearby beds to drip irrigation.

Rust dots from nails or lath often need a stucco repair: the metal is exposed or treated, then patched. If paint or patching is involved, clean the area first so the repair bonds well, and expect the patch to look slightly different until the wall is painted.

Cost and when to bring in a pro

A few small streaks under a single fixture are a reasonable DIY job with a rust remover and some care. Whole walls with sprinkler banding, second-story stains or colored stucco are where an experienced crew helps, because the line between lifting a stain and marking the stucco is narrow. Say Wash It treats rust as a spot treatment within a house wash, which runs $0.35 per square foot of exterior wall as of October 2026. Every visit has a $195 minimum, and the final flat price is confirmed before work begins.
