Cleaning Steep Driveways Safely

A steep driveway can be cleaned well, but it must be washed from the top down, with careful footing and a plan for where all that water runs.

Yes, steep driveways can be cleaned, with a different plan

A steep driveway gets cleaned with the same core tools as a flat one: pre-treatment, a rotary surface cleaner and a rinse. What changes is the order, the footing and the water. Everything starts at the top and moves down, so dirty water never runs over concrete that is already clean.

Gravity is the main factor. On a flat slab, water and detergent sit where you put them. On a hillside driveway they slide downhill within seconds, which shortens dwell time, concentrates dirt at the bottom and turns the lower half into a slick ramp.

Why wet concrete on a slope is dangerous

Algae, fine dust and detergent make sloped concrete slippery when wet, and a hillside drive in a shaded canyon often has a green film you cannot see until you step on it. A fall on a steep grade can carry you a long way, often while holding a hose under pressure.

Safe footing means shoes with real tread, never walking backwards downhill, and keeping hoses laid along the side rather than across your path. Many homeowners can handle a short, moderate slope. A long, steep drive with a curve or a drop-off at the edge is a reasonable place to hire help.

Hoses and surface cleaners also pull downhill. A surface cleaner that gets away from you on a steep grade can roll and gain speed, so keep a firm grip, keep the machine moving across the slope, and never leave it resting on the incline while you adjust the hose.

The top-down method, step by step

First, sweep and blow off leaves, gravel and debris from top to bottom. Then apply cleaning solution in sections, starting at the top, and keep each section small enough that it does not dry or run off before you clean it. On hot Valley afternoons that might be only a few car lengths at a time.

Next, run the surface cleaner across the slope in overlapping passes rather than straight up and down. Working across the grade keeps the machine stable and gives more even results. Spot-treat oil and tire marks with a degreaser before the main pass.

Finally, rinse from the very top again, pushing all loosened dirt down and off. If you skip the final top-down rinse, the dirty film that ran down will dry as stripes and patches on the lower section.

Controlling runoff at the bottom

Every gallon you use ends up at the base of the driveway, usually at the street. Under Los Angeles Municipal Code section 64.70.02, untreated wash water from paved-surface washing cannot be discharged into the storm drain system. On a steep drive the water arrives fast, so it needs to be planned for before you start.

That typically means blocking the gutter inlet or the bottom edge with a berm, collecting the water and directing it to landscaping or a sanitary drain where appropriate. It also means sweeping up the grit that collects at the bottom. Hillside drives often deposit a small pile of silt right at the apron.

Traction after cleaning

Clean concrete usually has better grip than concrete coated in algae and dust. That is one of the real benefits of washing a steep drive, especially before the rainy season from roughly November through March when slopes stay damp.

Sealing changes the picture. Many sealers make concrete smoother and slicker when wet. If you plan to seal a steep driveway, ask about a sealer with an anti-slip additive or a penetrating sealer that does not build a film. Smooth, troweled concrete that is slippery even when clean may need texturing or grooving, which is a repair, not a cleaning job.

Cost and when to hand it off

As of October 2026, driveway cleaning on our calculator is $0.50 per square foot, with a $195 minimum per visit. Travel may be added for longer distances depending on ZIP. A slope does not change the per-foot rate, but measure carefully. Hillside driveways are often longer than they look from the street.

At Say Wash It we treat steep driveways as a safety job first and a cleaning job second. We set up runoff control at the bottom, work top-down, and walk the finished drive with you before we leave. If you want a starting number, the instant quote on this page works for sloped drives too.
